Case Study

On July 4, 1999 at 5:30 p.m., you are dispatched to the scene of a disturbance at 5th and Main. Upon arrival, you find John Smith walking north in Main Street dressed in swimming trunks. His gait is short and he stops a lot turning in a circle each time before continuing to walk north. You escort him to the sidewalk, where you ask him his name. He states "Johnny." You ask him what he is doing. He brusquely states "Swimming, Piedmont Park." You know that Piedmont Park is approximately three blocks away on 5th street.

Identify those factors or circumstances that would or would not lead you to believe the person has mental retardation. First, (I) identify the factors you find, then (2) describe why they indicate mental retardation, and finally, (3) discuss how those factors you find might not be related to mental retardation.
